Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
